Voltage Regulators

Voltage regulators are electrical devices that generate or maintain a power source’s output voltage. They ensure that the voltages are within an acceptable range. Even if there are input voltage changes, voltage regulators allow the output voltage to stay constant. These devices help eliminate power fluctuations, which can sometimes fry your devices.

Voltage regulators are integrated circuits used in laptops, computers, wristwatches, smartphones, and other gadgets that require an efficient power supply. They protect these products from damage and ensure maximum performance.

Voltage regulators utilize negative feedback control loops and simple feed-forward designs. They may also have electronic components or electromechanical mechanisms. Some designs allow the device to act as regulators for one or more AC/DC voltages. AC voltage stabilizers include electromechanical regulators, coil-rotation AC voltage regulators, and constant-voltage transformers or ferroresonant regulators.

DC voltage stabilizers use shunt or series regulators.

Types of Voltage Regulators

There are two main types of voltage regulators: switching voltage and linear voltage.

  • Switching voltage regulators are those used for switching series devices on and off. The output voltages they generate are higher than those of the input voltage. These voltage regulators are efficient because of their switched off or fully conducting characteristic. Thus, they do not waste power. The three types of switching voltage regulators are inverter, step up, and step down voltage regulators.
  • Linear voltage regulators are voltage dividers. These were the ones originally used for power supplies. Linear voltage regulators have varying resistance according to load, and this result to a constant output voltage. Unlike the switching voltage regulators, they waste a significant amount of power. There are five types of linear voltage regulators: fixed output, negative adjustable, positive adjustable, floating, and tracking.
